This year, the city of Oakland, CA and Fukuoka, Japan celebrate the 50th anniversary of establishing a Sister City relationship with events here in Oakland August 17-20, including the Dedication of 10 Japanese Lanterns in The Gardens at Lake Merritt.
Please join us this Sunday, August 19, 2012 at 8:30a at Torii Gate at Lake Merritt for the unveiling and dedication of the 10 new Japanese lanterns. This event is free and open to the public.
These 10 commissioned Japanese lanterns, copied from the lantern design at “Kashii Shrine” in Fukuoka and made entirely out of eco-friendly CompoClay, is financially supported by local citizens, businesses and organizations.
There will also be a dedication of a “Yoshino Cherry Tree.” This tree commemorates the Centennial of Japan’s gift of 3000 cherry trees to the U.S. in 1912 and is donated by the Japanese people, through the Hon. Hiroshi Inomata, Japanese Consul General in SF. It is donated to the citizens of Oakland in recognition of the strong ties that symbolize the eternal friendship between the U.S. and Japan.
We hope to see you there. Download the complete list of OFSCA events here - OFSCA 50th Anniversary Schedule of Events.
About the Oakland Fukuoka Sister City Association 50th Anniversary
In 1962 the city of Oakland formed a sister city relationship with Fukuoka, Japan. On the heels of World War II, then-President Eisenhower encouraged these connections to foster international understanding and harmony between cities and nations. Fukuoka, Japan’s new 38-year-old mayor, the Hon. Soichiro Takashima leads a delegation of 30 officials and citizens to Oakland. To celebrate this milestone and what it represents, Oakland is pulling out the stops with four days of celebratory events, showing off our city and sharing it with the delegation from Fukuoka. And they’re inviting the public to join in the fun.

Kianga Ford
Sculpture on the Grounds 2012
Montalvo Arts Center
The new seating installation at Lookout Point at the Montalvo Arts Center is now made entirely out of CompoClay. Collaborating with Japanese sound artist Mamoru Okuno, artist Kianga Ford creates a unique audio experience that draws inspiration from the landscape and history of Montalvo and the Santa Clara Valley. The installation begins at Montalvo’s historic Belvedere with a four-channel musical intervention by Okuno and continues up to Montalvo’s trails, weaving together his sounds, Ford’s stories, and the natural ambient noise of the environment. The sound adventure continues up Montalvo’s trails, ending at Lookout Point, a promontory located at the apex of the park where a brand new seating installation will guide visitors to enjoy the sweeping vista while continuing to listen to the piece. For more information about the installation, visit the Montalvo website at www.montalvoarts.org.
Check out photos on our Portfolio page on our website at compoclay.com/portfolio.
Check out some of our newest products currently in development. We are working on three new Living Wall Planter designs — Echo, Horizon and Slate — and testing out some new finishes for our Mesa, Tapered, Reed and Rotunda Bowl Planters. Take a look on our Flickr (www.flickr.com/photos/compoclay) and let us know what you think!
Join us at the Montalvo Arts Center on Friday, July 20 from 7p-10p for Rock the Garden, a garden party celebrating the official opening of Montavlo’s annual Sculpture on the Grounds program. Admission is free, as is limited on-site parking.
There will be a number of wonderful works on display that we are excited about. One in particular is the you are here: man. mountain. valley. sky installation by artist Kianga Ford.
Collaborating with Japanese sound artist Mamoru Okuno, Ford creates a unique audio experience that draws inspiration from the landscape and history of Montalvo and the Santa Clara Valley. The new seating installation at Lookout Point is made entirely out of, you guessed it, CompoClay! On the evening of “Rock the Garden,” Ford will lead an expedition through the installation departing at 7:45pm. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
The evening will be filled with art, dance, food and drink, and music, with highlights including a live performance by eclectic San Franciso-based band Tin Hat, dance performance by Jeannine Charles/ArtistEDGE, and the opportunity for attendees to participate in a monumental live video art piece by media artist Daniel Canogar: an enormous projection on the historic Villa, entitled Asalto Montalvo.
